The Modular Control System ARS can be used in the area of machine and production lines control in all industrial branches. The number and equipment of communication interfaces predestines it for an inclusion into the industrial monitoring and data-logging systems. Relatively large capacity of the add-on memory (up to 1 MB) enables the use of the system in application with operational parameters history recording. The powerful thermocouple input modules enable the use of the system as multi-loop temperature regulator / monitor.
Control System Kit
The modular concept of the system carries the following advantages:
The system can be equipped with exactly such number and such types of input and output modules as required by the actual application.
The input and output modules are equipped with connectors with screw terminals for connecting the external circuits. Therefore the external circuits can be simply disconnected and possible replacement of the module can be done in several seconds.
At present time the following modules are available:
- ARS-CPU552A(E) - the processor unit
- ARS-SBR6 - the bus with cover
- ARS-MEM1024 - add-on memory unit

Description
In the longer axis of the base frame there is the bus attached perpendicular to the frame. The input and output modules are inserted into the bus from the both sides. Above the bus there is the processor unit with built-in power supply. Into the processor unit there can be the add-on memory unit inserted. The whole control system is enclosed in metal cover and the outer dimensions are 406 × 214 × 72 mm (W × H × D).
Processor Unit ARS-CPU552A(E)
There are the following elements in the Processor Unit:
- The Philips 80C552 Processor
- EPROM 32 kB memory
- CMOS RAM 32 kB battery backed-up memory
- Free socket suitable for insertion the 32 kB EPROM, CMOS RAM or EEPROM memory. The memory is accessible both as the program and data and can be used for program development and debugging. The CMOS RAM memory power can be battery backed-up
- Real time clock (only ARS-CPU552AE)
- Serial communication interface RS-232C (only the RXD, TXD signals) and RS-422/RS-485 (the processor's serial channel can be programatically connected to whichever of these interfaces). The function of the serial channel (transmission and reception) is indicated by two LEDs. All communication interfaces are galvanically isolated from the processor power (they have an own power source). The maximum communication speed is 57600Bd
- Galvanically isolated power source. The control system can be powered either by DC voltage in range 20 to 30 V or by AC voltage 19 V. The operation of the power source is indicated by a LED
- Power source for analog circuits and voltage reference (only ARS-CPU552AE)
- Beeper for acoustic signalling. It is connected to the processor's PWM output
- One red and one green LED for visual signalling. They are connected to the processor's outputs
The Bus with Cover ARS-SBR6
Into the ARS-SBR6 bus there can be the processor unit, the add-on memory unit and 6 I/O modules installed. With the bus the metal cover is delivered.
Add-on Memory Unit ARS-MEM1024
The ARS-MEM1024 add-on memory unit has two free sockets, which can accept following memory elements:
- EPROM 128 kB, 256 kB or 512 kB
- CMOS RAM 128 kB or 512 kB
- EEPROM 64 kB
Therefore the maximum memory capacity is 1 MB for CMOS RAM or EPROM memories and 128 kB for EEPROM memories. Into the socket any combination of memory elements can be inserted. The CMOS RAM memory power can be battery backed-up.
Digital Input Module ARS-IDB16
The ARS-IDB16 module consists of 16 opto-isolated digital inputs organized into two groups 8 inputs each. Each group of eight inputs has one common terminal. The input is activated by bringing the voltage of arbitrary polarity between the input and common terminal. The input current is ca. 7 mA at 24 V. The state of the inputs is indicated by LEDs.
Transistor Output Module ARS-OD16
The ARS-OD16 module consists of 16 opto-isolated digital NPN outputs (the output switches to the negative pole of the source). From the outputs there can be drawn up to 150 mA permanently and 350 mA short-term at 24 V. The module can be used for voltages 12 to 35 V. The outputs are protected by clamping diodes. The state of the outputs is indicated by LEDs.
Transistor Output Module ARS-OS16
The ARS-OS16 module consists of 16 opto-isolated digital PNP outputs (the output switches to the positive pole of the source). From the outputs there can be drawn up to 80 mA permanently and 350 mA short-term at 24 V. The module can be used for voltages 12 to 35 V. The outputs are protected by clamping diodes. The state of the outputs is indicated by LEDs.
Combined Module ARS-MSB78
The ARS-MSB78 module consist of 7 opto-isolated transistor PNP outputs (the output switches to the positive pole of the source) and 8 opto-isolated digital inputs. From the outputs there can be drawn up to 80 mA permanently and 350 mA short-term at 24 V. The module can be used for voltages 12 to 35 V. The outputs are protected by clamping diodes. All eight inputs have one common terminal. The input is activated by bringing the voltage of an arbitrary polarity between the input and common terminal. The input current is ca. 7 mA at 24 V. The state of the inputs is indicated by LEDs.
Relay Output Module ARS-OCV12
The ARS-OCV12 module consists of 12 relay outputs organized into three groups 4 outputs each. Each group of four inputs has one common terminal. The maximum rating of the outputs is 2 A at 30 V DC. The state of the outputs is indicated by LEDs. The module requires an external power 24 V DC, the consumption from the external source is ca. 100 mA.
Analog Input Module ARS-IA16
The ARS-IA16 module consists of 16 analog inputs. The input range (0 to 5 V, 0 to 10 V, 0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA) can be selected for each input separately by a jumper on the board. The galvanic isolation of the inputs from the processor guarantees good noise immunity.
Thermocouple Input Module ARS-ITC16A
The ARS-ITC16A module consists of 16 thermocouple inputs, isolated or non-isolated thermocouples can be connected. Because the modul is equipped with the temperature compensation of the comparative end of the thermocouple, the error caused by temperature changes in the measured place is eliminated. There can be connected thermocouples of the E (chromel - konstantan), J (iron - konstantan), K (chromel - alumel), T (copper - konstantan), R (platinum 13% - platinum/rhodium), S (platinum 10% - platinum/rhodium) types used. The five temperature ranges for each thermocouple type can be switched by software. The resistance of all connected thermocouples is permanently monitored, therefore the potential degradation of the thermocouple can be detected in time. The galvanic isolation of the thermocouples and measuring circuits from the processor guarantees a good noise immunity.
